Amy’s Liberation - An Interview
An interesting aspect of emotional sobriety is that it is not an action we take. Instead it is a state of being that comes to us as the byproduct of applying the Steps more and more deeply. Some might even say that emotional sobriety falls upon us.
Amy’s story is a powerful illustration of this as well as being an inspiration and demonstration of Step Two’s promise of restoration of sanity. However it is not only the sanity of sobriety, but a restoration to well-being.
Like many, Amy’s recovery path is filled with difficulties. What is less common in her story is her willingness to admit grave mental health challenges that emerged at six or seven years into sobriety. Those issues forced her to find outside assistance that proved to be critical. Her story affirms the value of mental health treatment as a complement to a program of recovery.
At the same time she doubled and tripled down on her efforts with the Twelve Steps. The result was a much deeper understanding of blocks within her that prevented her fullest restoration. And Amy also gained a powerful perspective with regard to the old ideas that she long held, old ideas that prevented her from growing into a much more mature sobriety.
What is striking about Amy’s story is how emotional sobriety came to her as “being placed in a position of neutrality” in all her relationships. The result is a healing of relationships across the board, which is clearly no small thing for any of us.
Beyond that, what is even more impressive is how finally Amy found herself. After decades of being lost in alcoholism, mental health problems, and an unrealized life, her progressive recovery has brought clarity for her life and her path.
We think you’ll find her experience and strength quite useful, but the hope she now demonstrates is simply wonderful to hear.
