To Be Fully Human: An Interview with Eric
Through recovery Eric found Buddhism, and within that practice and a Heart of Recovery community he found a way forward using the twelve steps that was well suited to him. Along the way he discovered that while being sober is wonderful, it is not enough.
Sobriety left him to face emotions long suppressed or unknown to him. In a particularly difficult time battling for parental rights for his daughter, he came face-to-face with the upheaval of his feelings. They were not manageable. They were not rational. Eric could not will himself to not experience them.
It was there he realized that for him emotional sobriety was not some gilded path without disruption. It was not to bypass his complex emotions, but to fully allow and embody them.
Eric asks us to consider whether the goal of sobriety and emotional sobriety might not be to accept and allow our humanity. To be present to being fully human.
